Antiope was an Amazon warrior in Greek mythology. Sister to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, she was an exemplary fighter and leader of women.
Antiope’s name is translated as “against” or “opposed to” (anti-) and “sight” or “appearance” (opsis). In rare cases, ‘ops’ in Ancient Greek was used to mean “voice” and so the possible interpretations make her the perfect patron for a practice that trains you to assert yourself in mind, body and voice.
Amazon warriors in mythology were undoubtedly based on real warrior women hailing from countries to the northeast of Greece and whose graves have been found in their hundreds.
Antiope is a legendary archetype of these ancient warriors and serves to honour history’s wild women, female fighters and powerful protectresses.
